To Sidney, With Love – Moment of silence please for Sidney Poitier, who broke the color line by becoming a star in major motion pictures, including A Raisin in the Sun, To Sir With Love, They Call Me Mr. Tibbs, Lilies of the Field (for which he won the Oscar for Best Actor) and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? He came, and he stayed.
The Heart of a Pig – Mark Twain is quoted as saying, “Don’t try and teach a pig to sing. It’s a waste of your time, and it annoys the pig.” But DO use a pig’s heart to keep you alive. Take it from this Maryland man who is alive with a pig’s heart beating inside his chest. I’m sure this guy who got the transplant is as happy as a pig in slop, no?
Meet the New GM/Head Coach (same as the old GM/Head Coach) After yet another disappointing season, Da Bearz have parted ways with both GM Ryan Pace and Head Coach Matt Nagy. In 7 years Pace has not selected the proper personnel to upgrade the team to contender-caliber. And Nagy, touted as an offensive genius, had them near the bottom of all offensive categories in his 4 years. Chairman George McCaskey, who has a 79 – 97 record since he took over running the franchise in 2011, just hired Ryan Poles as GM and Matt Eberflus as coach, so it’s now “The Ryan & Matt 2.0 Show” as we head to next season. (Why didn’t McCaskey just hire Aaron Rodgers for the dual role of GM & Head Coach? He’s not busy at the moment …)

Book Recommendations – My learning goal is to get through at least 40 non-fiction books (including audio books) a year. This is where I find the ideas to help my clients grow their business. Below are the ones I read this past month.
Republican Rescue – Saving the Party from Truth Deniers, Conspiracy Theorists, and the Dangerous Policies of Joe Biden Former NJ Governor Chris Christie doesn’t hold back. Of course he bashes the current administration. But he also chastises the unhinged wing of the Republican party: Election outcome deniers (including Donald Trump), vaccine resistors (Christie almost died from Covid) and conspiracy wackos.
Invention – A Life If you think the name Dyson just means vacuum cleaners, you’d be woefully underestimating the prolific inventive genius of James Dyson. His namesake firm is responsible for the invention/design/manufacturing and sales of 25 million products a year. He founded his own Dyson Institute for the development of its students to create future breakthrough technologies. He’s also a major philanthropist, donating millions through his foundation to support design and engineering education.
How the Word Is Passed – A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America This is an unflinching look from a number of angles about the story of enslaved human beings, how they were an integral part of the founding of the United States, and that slavery was the economic engine that drove our country to independence.
Twelve and a Half – Leveraging the Emotional Ingredients Necessary for Business Success “The growth potential of most businesses is limited by the emotional intelligence of their leaders,” says serial entrepreneur wizard Gary Vaynerchuk. This has all of Gary Vee’s ideas on how to improve your EI.
Troy – The Greek Myths Reimagined This “reimagines” the mythical war between the Greeks and Trojans (circa 1200 B.C.) in much more reader-friendly prose than Homer’s version. All of your favorite Greek gods, ancient heroes, villains and damsels make an appearance, especially Helen of Troy, who is at the center of the conflict.
Frederick Douglass – A Biography Here’s the story of Frederick Douglas, who remarkably rose above slavery to become an abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman.
The Age of Elizabeth – There’s plenty of intrigue in the rise and then 45-year reign of Elizabeth I in England. She ushered in the era of the Reformation and fought many political and religious battles with other countries, especially against Spain’s Phillip II. Her leadership allowed England to eventually gain political dominance over Europe.
From Alien to Citizen – The Story of My Life in America A well-written memoir by Hungarian immigrant Edward A. Steiner that takes you from his early trials in adapting to the USA to becoming a university professor and immigration expert.
