The Wrath of Ian – Hurricane Ian tore through southwestern Florida, leaving massive devastation in its wake. Homes flooded, boats tossed onto land, streets filled with several feet of water, thousands of people homeless. Some say it’s the worst hurricane ever, which says a lot. Yes, thoughts and prayers are in order for the people there.
The (Ukraine) Empire Strikes Back In the past month Ukraine has made significant advances in taking back Russian-occupied territory, a sign that the tide of this war, while not over, may be turning. You can donate to the Ukrainian people here. Or you can purchase a Ukraine Candle here. All proceeds to to a not-for-profit there.
Sick in the Head – Conversations About Life and Comedy Interviews with over 30 well-known comedians (including Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Jimmy Fallon and Amy Schumer) about how they developed their craft. You’ll learn that their success is just like any other top achiever’s: Hard work, creativity and determination.
Book Recommendations – My learning goal is to get through at least 50 non-fiction books (including audio books) a year. This is where I find the ideas to help my clients grow their business. Below are the ones I read this past month.
My Top Book Pick – Uncultured An unflinching memoir from Daniella Mestyanek Young, who survived both the Children of God cult and then the male-dominated US Army. You’ll be both horrified and amazed at all she’s been through to become the person she is today. Daniella and I met in 2017 on ACP AdvisorNet.org. At the time she was thinking about her next career step when she finished her Army commitment — perhaps a day job as a military security analyst, or maybe a CIA/FBI agent. So I asked, “What would you really like to do?” And she revealed that she’d like to share her cult experience stories. As result of that initial conversation I hold an autographed copy of her book in my hand!
iWoz – How I Invented the Personal Computer and Had Fun Along the Way This autobiography, (published in 2006), let’s you clearly understand that while Steve Jobs was the face of Apple, Steve Wozniak was the lead designer of the Apple 1, then the Apple 2 — the first personal computer to sell one million units.
Benjamin Franklin’s Last Bet: The Favorite Founder’s Divisive Death, Enduring Afterlife, and Blueprint for Prosperity As if Benjamin Franklin wasn’t impressive enough as a founding father, he left in his will $1,000 to both Boston and Philadelphia to be used 200 years after his death. The result? These funds grew to millions of dollars and paid for, among other things, the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology. This established him as the father of American Philanthropy.
Charlie Chaplin: A Brief Life Born into poverty in London in 1889, by 1916 Charlie Chaplin rose up to become the most well-know and highest-paid Hollywood silent film star of his time. Check out some of his zany antics as The Little Tramp.
