Moment of Silence Please – Several great musicians left us this past month, including Jeff Beck and David Crosby. But no loss affected us here in Chicago as much as the passing of beloved WXRT DJ Lin Brehmer. He was like our “indie-radio best friend” every morning during his 30+ years. We’ll miss his smiling voice, wit and wisdom.
Tanks A Lot – Ukraine President, Volodymyr Zelensky has been asking for German Leopard 2 tanks, and now appears to be getting some. These are critical for Ukraine’s effort to defend the country. . . Or, you can buy a Ukraine candle — all proceeds go to a not-for-profit there. Or you can purchase a Ukraine Candle here. All proceeds to to a not-for-profit there.
A “Not So Fine” Kettle of Fish Do you love to catch and eat freshwater fish? A recent study suggests they are loaded with “Forever Chemicals” that can be hazardous to your health, . . .
Book Recommendations – My learning goal is to get through at least 50 non-fiction books (including audio books) a year. This is where I find the ideas to help my clients grow their business. Below are the ones I read this past month.
The Psychology of Money: Timeless Lessons on Wealth, Greed, and Happiness. This is packed with a lot of great lessons about how financially successful people get wealthy, then stay wealthy, and how much is “enough.” If you’re a Financial Advisor, read this book. Then get a copy for your financially anxious clients.
Unreasonable Hospitality: The Remarkable Power of Giving People More Than They Expect Successful restaurateur Will Guidara figured out that people just don’t want a meal — they want a memorable experience. You can apply this to your business — what extra touches can you do for your staff and clients that will be unforgettable?
Operation Mincemeat: How a Dead Man and a Bizarre Plan Fooled the Nazis and Assured an Allied Victory Read this true story about how British intelligence officers duped the Germans into believing the successful mid-1943 Allied invasion would not be at Sicily. The cast of characters come alive in its pages, even the dead man!
Every Goddamn Day: A Highly Selective, Definitely Opinionated, and Alternatingly Humorous and Heartbreaking Historical Tour of Chicago 365 days (plus one for leap year) about all kinds of Chicago-related daily vignettes of interest from the past 2 centuries. A must read for everyone with roots in the City of the Big Shoulders.
The Quest for Character: What the Story of Socrates and Alcibiades Teaches Us about Our Search for Good Leaders How philosophers Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and others tried to teach the most important characteristic for their leaders: Virtue. (We could use more of that in our leaders today, no?)
Financial Advisors – I coach Financial Advisors around the country to help them grow their clientele. I always want to meet FA’s, branch managers and/or fund wholesalers anywhere in the US. Your introductions are greatly appreciated.
